The Book of Luke
Who is Luke writing to? (Luke 1:3) Why is Luke writing this account? (1:4) What is the name of the priest and his wife, mentioned in Luke 1:5? Were they good people? (1:6) What was the problem with the wife, and the husband? (1:7) Where was this priest working, and how was he chosen for the task? (1:8) What were the people doing at the time of the incense offering? (1:10) At this time, who appears to the priest, and where was he standing? (1:11) The priest was obviously frightened by this, but what words of assurance and promise are spoken to him? (1:13) What name shall be given to the child, born of the promise? (1:13) What will this child be like, and what will fill him? (1:15) Whose spirit and power will fill this child? (1:17) How would you summarize this child’s purpose in life? (1:17) When Zechariah questions the angel, how does the angel respond? Who is he? (1:19) What will happen to Zechariah because he questioned what the Lord had spoken to him? ( 1:20) What did the waiting people realize when Zechariah finally came out to them?
(1:22)
What happened to Elizabeth, and how long was she in seclusion? (1:24) How does Elizabeth feel about what has happened to her? (1:25) When was the angel Gabriel sent on his next mission? (1:26) Where, and to whom, was Gabriel sent? (Luke 1:26-27) What was the name of the woman’s fiancé? Whose house was he descended from? (1:27) How does the angel greet the young woman? (1:28) She, too, was confused about why the angel had appeared to her. What does Gabriel say to her, to ease her mind? (1:30) What will happen to Mary, and what will she name her son? (1:31) What will this son be called? (1:32) What will the Lord God give to the son born to Mary? (1:32) When will his Kingdom end? (1:33) Mary asks how this can happen to her, since she is still a virgin. What does the angel tell her will give birth to her child? (1:35) What will her son be called? (1:35) What does the angel say, to help prove to Mary that these things shall be fulfilled? (1:36) What is the great affirmation of Luke 1:37? Now, what is Mary’s response to what has happened to her? (1:38) Who did Mary go to visit, in order to confirm what the angel had told her? (1:40) What happened when this woman heard Mary’s voice? (:41) Who does Elizabeth say is blessed? (1:42) In response, Mary says some very special words. These verses, Luke 1:46-55 are known as “The Magnificat,” because it begins with the words, “My soul magnifies the Lord.” Mary must have known her Bible (The Old Testament) pretty well. She is repeating what another woman said many centuries before, when this lady was blessed with a miraculous birth. Who was this woman from the Old Testament?
(I Samuel 2:1)
How long did Mary stay with Elizabeth? What happened at the end of that time? (Luke 1:56-57) What name did the community want to give to Elizabeth’s son? (1:59) What did Elizabeth say he should be called? (1:60) The neighbors weren’t happy about this, and tried to get Zechariah involved in the naming of the child. Since he still couldn’t talk, what did he do to show his desire for his son? (1:63) What happened to Zechariah after he wrote these words? (1:64) What did everyone ponder? (1:66) (compare with Luke 2:19) Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied about the Messiah! How does he describe him? (1:69) What has God remembered? (1:72-73) Who will be prepare the way for him? (1:76) What will the new dawn from heaven bring? (1:79) Where did this child, John, grow strong in the spirit? (1:80) Who decreed that all the world should be registered? (2:1) Who was the governor of Syria at this time? (2:2) Where did Joseph go? Why? (2:4) Who went with him? (2:5) While they were in this place, Mary had her baby. What did she wrap him in, and where did she place him? (2:7) At this time, who was living in the fields? (2:8) Who appeared to them? (2:9) What did the angel say? (2:10) Who is the Savior born for? (2:11) Suddenly, an angelic army filled the sky! What were their words? (2:14) When the angels departed, the shepherds went to Bethlehem to check this whole thing out! Who did they find there? (2:16) (compare Matthew 2:11....who did the wise men find?) At the proper time, this child was circumcised and named. What name was he given? (2:21) What did the couple offer as a sacrifice to the Lord? (2:24) Note: Because of what they offered, we believe that Mary and Joseph were quite poor financially. Read Leviticus 12:8 to confirm this. Luke 2:25 - 4:44 What is the name of the righteous man, who has been waiting for the consolation of Israel? (Luke 2:25) What has the Holy Spirit revealed to him? (2:26) When this man lifts the baby in his arms, he praises God and says something about how he could now spend the rest of his life. In what condition will he leave in? (2:29) FYI: This is a very famous phrase, known for many centuries by its Latin name: The Nunc Dimittis (meaning, “Now let me depart”) What will this child be? (2:32) Simeon then blesses Mary and Joseph and gives a warning to Mary. What is the last part of the warning, or prophecy? (2:35) There is also an old woman, a prophetess, in the Temple at this time. What is her name? (2:36) Does she often visit the Temple? (2:37) What does she do when she sees the baby Jesus in the Temple? (2:38) Where do Mary and Joseph now go? (2:39) How does the child grow? (2:40) What festival did Jesus’ parents always go to Jerusalem for? (2:41) How old is Jesus when his parents take him to the festival? (2:42) When Jesus does not show up on the journey home, where do Mary and Joseph eventually find him? (2:46) How long do they look for him, before they find him? (2:46) When Mary admonishes him for worrying she and Joseph, what does Jesus say?
(2:49)
What does Mary do with all these thoughts? (2:51) How does Jesus grow? (2:52) (compare this with the growth of Samuel in I Samuel 2:26) Where is John when the word of God comes to him? (3:2) What does he proclaim? Which prophet is he echoing? (3:3-4) Does John have nice things to say to the crowds that come to him? What does he call them? (3:7) What is God able to raise up from stones? (3:8) When the crowd asks what they should do to avoid the fatal judgment that awaits them, what does John tell them to do? (3:11) How about the tax collectors? (3:13) How about the soldiers? (3:14) The people wonder if John is the Messiah or not. In response, what does John say he is not worthy to do for the Messiah when he does arrive? (3:16) What will be in the Messiah’s hand? (3:17) Who has John arrested and thrown in prison? Why? (3:19-20) What happens when Jesus is baptized, and is praying? (3:21-22) What does the voice from heaven say about Jesus? (3:22) How old is Jesus when he begins his work? (3:23) Who far back does Luke trace the genealogy of Jesus? (3:38) (FYI and a question: compare this with Matthew 1:2, which traces the genealogy back to Abraham; why might Luke have gone farther back than Matthew?) After Jesus is baptized, and is described as being full of the Holy Spirit, what happens to him? (4:2) What is Jesus’ answer to the devil’s first temptation, about turning stones into bread? (4:4) What is Jesus’ answer to the devil’s second temptation, about receiving all power and authority from the devil? (4:8) What is Jesus’ answer to the devil’s third temptation, about throwing himself down from the top of the Temple and letting the angels catch him? (4:12) When the devil departs, what will he be waiting for? (4:13) Where does Jesus go now? (4:14)
Where does he teach, and how do people feel
about him? (4:15)
When he reads the scroll from the prophet Isaiah, in his hometown synagogue, what does he say about the scripture he has just read? (4:21) What does Jesus tell them about their lack of acceptance of him? (4:24) What Old Testament prophets are mentioned by Jesus at this time? Are these comforting words to the hometown people, or words of warning and judgment? (4:25-27) What do the people of Nazareth try to do to Jesus? (4:29) How does he get away? (4:30) Where does Jesus go now? (4:31) Why are the people astonished at his teaching? (4:32) What does Jesus have an encounter with in the synagogue? (4:33) Does this threat to Jesus know who he is? (4:39) As the sun is setting, who is brought to Jesus? (4:40) What do the demons shout? (4:41) Does Jesus allow them to say this publicly? (4:41) The next day, where does Jesus go? (4:42) The crowds found Jesus, and begged him to stay and help them. What does Jesus say he must do? (4:43) Luke 5:1-6:49 Where is Jesus standing when the crowd presses in on him, wanting to hear more about the word of God? (Luke 5:1) Whose boat does Jesus get into? (5:3) After Jesus teaches the crowd, from the boat, from shallow water, what does he ask of the owner of the boat? (5:4) What is Simon’s response? (5:5) Do they catch anything? (5:6) What does Simon ask of Jesus, and why? (5:8) Who are partners with Simon in the fishing business? (5:10) What does Jesus say to Simon? (5:10) Is it just Simon who follows Jesus? (5:11) Jesus heals a man in Luke 5:12-13. What is wrong with the man? Who does Jesus tell the man to go and see? (5:14) Jesus had told the man not to tell anyone that Jesus had healed him, but he must have, according to Luke 5:15. Who does 5:15 say came to Jesus? What does Jesus do, after a long day of healing and teaching? (5:16) With a large crowd of people watching, including a group of Pharisees, who is brought for healing to Jesus? (5:18) How do this man’s friends bring him face to face with Jesus? (5:19) What does Jesus say, when he sees the faith of these people? (5:20) The Pharisees are appalled at what Jesus says. (5:31) What are the two sayings that Jesus gives in Luke 5:38-39? What do they mean, do you think? When Jesus is confronted by the Pharisees about eating plucked grain on the Sabbath, what figure from Israel’s history does Jesus refer to to defend his disciples? (6:3) Who is lord of the Sabbath? (6:5) When Jesus is continually frustrated by the Pharisees strict interpretation of the Law, what does he ask them about the Sabbath? (6:9) After Jesus heals the man’s withered hand, on the Sabbath, what do the Pharisees discuss with one another? (6:11) After spending a night in prayer to God, Jesus called the disciples together and chose 12 of them to be his immediate followers. What are the names of the 12 disciples? Where does Jesus stand when he teaches the crowds and his disciples? (6:17) Why is the crowd trying to touch Jesus? (6:19) Who is blessed in 6:20? Who is blessed in 6:21?
