Boaz describes the situation.  Naomi has sold the land her husband owned, but she should have first offered it to the nearest kinsman.  Boaz says the situation should now be made right, and they can make it right by concluding an agreement in front of the elders of the community.  Boaz says this man, the nearest kinsman, has the right to buy the land back, and all the property associated with it.  There is a special word used to describe this “buying back.”  What is it?  (4:4b)

Hint:  This is a salvation word, often associated with the work of Jesus

If this near kinsman does not want to make the agreement, who has the next opportunity to do so?  (4:4)

How does the near kinsman respond? (4:4)

Boaz now goes on to explain that with the property, the near kinsman will also acquire Ruth as a wife.  It was the Hebrew custom that the nearest kinsman had the right to marry and take care of the widows in his family.  With this new knowledge, what does the near kinsman say?  (4:6)

Read Matthew 1:1
Whose genealogy is being put forth?

Read Matthew 1:5
It tells us that Jesus comes from the line of Boaz and Ruth!  Without  Ruth, the Moabitess, Jesus would not have been born of the family he was!  What an amazing thing!  It is a foreigner, Ruth, that helps continue the line of the Messiah!

And, even more….who does Matthew 1:5 say is the mother of Boaz?

No wonder they say that the story of Jesus Christ is the greatest story ever told!
